Making progress
How Spikes, status, trades, and lead information turn into a winnable endgame.
ADV RU gives many Pokémon several plausible jobs. An early move often reveals less than the item, Speed order, and switch it provokes.
Opening: collect useful information
The lead matchup can establish:
- whether a Pokémon is faster;
- whether Lum Berry blocks the first status attempt;
- whether Politoed or Poliwrath has Damp;
- whether a lead preserves value after setting Spikes;
- which resistance the opponent trusts first.
Protecting the lead at all costs can waste this information. Trading it without knowing what the trade opens wastes the Pokémon instead.
Spikes need forced movement
Roselia brings defensive value after setting Spikes. Cacturne has more aggressive ways to force or survive a trade. Pineco can combine Spikes, Rapid Spin, and Explosion.
Spikes carry more weight after the ban. The fixed July ledger gives that recommendation a limited check: 11 of 38 sides visibly used Spikes for 22 executions, 15 sides revealed Banette, Haunter, or Sableye, and one side visibly used Rapid Spin three times. Repeat testers supply much of that ledger, so those counts describe the film room rather than the whole tier.
The layer count matters less than the sequence it supports. One layer can be enough when Raichu, Aggron, Stantler, Banette, or a Choice Band attacker keeps forcing the same grounded switch. Three layers achieve little if the setter grants free setup or the opponent spins without risk.
Before clicking Spikes, name the likely next switch and the attack or status move that punishes it.
Paralysis changes the roster
Thunder Wave and Stun Spore let Aggron, Stantler, Poliwrath, Meganium, Banette, and other mid-speed threats act before checks that normally contain them. Paralysis also makes full turns uncertain, so a sound plan cannot require one specific full paralysis.
Good paralysis targets are tied to an endgame:
- slow the only Raichu or Rapidash answer for a breaker;
- slow a Psychic-type so Hitmonchan or Banette can pressure it;
- slow a Water-type before a physical setup attempt;
- slow a spinner so the Ghost or setter controls the exchange.
Ground-types ignore Thunder Wave. Natural Cure Roselia can clear status by switching. Lum Berry may turn the first attempt into a lost turn.
Toxic attacks the switch plan
Toxic punishes bulky answers that expect to enter repeatedly. It matters most when the opposing team lacks Heal Bell, Natural Cure, Rest, or enough offensive tempo to end the game first.
Do not spread Toxic without tracking which target matters. Poisoning the wrong switch can activate a more dangerous sequence while the intended wall stays clean.
Explosion is an exchange, not a damage button
Explosion and Self-Destruct use ADV’s Defense-halving calculation. Swalot, Pineco, Camerupt, and other users can remove or heavily damage a named obstacle.
Check three points first:
- Is Damp active or still possible?
- Does a Ghost enter for free?
- Which teammate wins because this target leaves?
If the third answer is vague, keep the piece. Its resistances, status, or ordinary attacks may be worth more than a blind trade.
Midgame: protect the scarce answer
Count jobs rather than HP bars. Aggron at half health may still be the only safe Normal resistance. Roselia under pressure may still be the only Water and Electric pivot. Hitmonchan may need to choose between attacking now and preserving Mach Punch for a pinch-berry endgame.
Force the opponent to spend their compressed piece first. Repeated double switches, Knock Off, status, and Spikes all work when they attack the same assignment.
Endgame: state the condition
An endgame can be written in one sentence:
- Raichu wins after Whiscash is removed.
- Rapidash wins after Politoed is poisoned and in range.
- Poliwrath wins after the Ghost and priority user are weakened.
- Calm Mind Xatu wins after the Dark coverage target is removed or paralyzed.
- Choice Band Pidgeot wins after Aggron is trapped in a recovery-free sequence.
Recheck that sentence after every trade. When it stops being true, choose a new condition before making the next sacrifice.
